  1. Spotty,

It is always gratifying to see someone hoist on their own petard. Nevertheless, it is also sobering to see how quickly the rigid morals machine can turn on someone. Spot has read some of the transcript of the, well, interrogation of Senator Craig. Spot says it is a rap that probably could have been beaten; a good cross examination of the police would have been quite interesting.

The larger question for Spot is: do we want this torch and pitchfork crowd to be anywhere near running the show?

  2. John E Iacono,

Seems pretty clear that tolerance in this country for gay behaviors is not nearly at levels we have been led to believe. Of maybe its just intolerance for repubs.

As for “running the show,” on the level where the boot hits the ground, these folks (the police) ARE running the show. And it would appear from the uproar — against the accused — that most folks (at least those in the media) agree with them.

  3. Spotty,

Spot doesn’t think you can make that as a blanket statement about the police, John. It isn’t fair to the — admittedly few — cops that Spot knows or has, er, encountered. What troubles Spot much more is the religious right wing zealots that animate the Republican Party.

  4. Rook,

What I’d like to know is whether David Vitter is also going to resign. Or are there various “quantities of immorality” in effect for the GOP?

I swear, sometimes I think the GOP effort to Impeach Clinton was not to remove him from office, but to set the standard so they themselves would be able to point at Clinton and say “He didn’t resign, why should we?”

But then, in the end, it’s still all about hypocrisy, and the GOP is certainly cornering the market these days.

As to the whole legal set-up, I think it’s ridiculous that men are being arrested for attempting to hook up for anonymous sex. How about we just have them arrested for actually having sex in a public bathroom. That makes sense. Otherwise, it’s simply an assumption they were going to have sex in public.

  5. John E Iacono,

    Spotty,

My comment was meant neither to praise nor to vilify the police, as I thought my next sentence would make clear. Sorry if it was not clear to you.

    I’ll try again:

As for running the show, “religious right wing zealots”, (if such a group even exists any more than the “looney left”), is certainly not “running the show” — and is even more certainly not controlling the whole country’s responses. At the airport? Please!

And judging from the outcry across the country, the public (at least the media portion) agree with how those who ARE running the show (the police) are doing it.

  6. CW,

What got him burned wasn’t trolling for guys in a bathroom — it was opposing the Patriot Act: http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2005/12/20/AR2005122001488.html

Notice that this “news” didn’t hit the press until the day that Gonzales resigned.

He wasn’t hoisted upon his own petard — he was stabbed in the back by Bush.
