(If you’re joining us late, today is Constitution Day. The previous post asked a serious question about how the Constitution fits the exigencies of the moment. But, as promised this morning, this more frivolous post will give you a chance to test your knowledge of the history of the U.S. Constitution. A link to the answers is at the bottom.
Here are three easy ones to get you started:
- Where was the Constitutional Convention held?
- What are the first seven words of the Preamble to the Constitution?
- According to the Constitution, how old must you be to become president?
There are tougher questions on the jump…
This is the intermediate level.
Which of the following members of the founding generation, listed below in alphabetical order, were present at the Constitutional Convention?
John Adams- Aaron Burr
- Ben Franklin
- Alexander Hamilton
- John Hancock
- Patrick Henry
- Thomas Jefferson
- James Madison
- Gouverneur Morris
- Tom Paine
- Roger Sherman
- George Washington.
p.s. If you looked back at the picture at the top of this post, that is so pitiful.
This is the advanced level.
Three prominent members of the Constitutional Convention, stayed to the end but decided not to sign the draft and opposed ratification. Can you name them?
(If you’re working on the advanced level question above, which is quite tough, here are three hints.
One of them has named for him a small university that made an improbable run to the Final Four in last year’s NCAA men’s basketball tournament.- One of them has a name that lives on in an eponymous word for a way of drawing legislative districts to gain partisan advantage.
- One of them was a member George Washington’s cabinet.
This last question is very hard. No one on whom I have tried it out has gotten it.:
What is the most recent amendment to the U.S. Constitution?
To help you not cheat, I’ve considerately posted the answers to the quiz questions on this attached page.
Feel free to let me know by comment below if you enjoy quizzes like this. I’ll gladly devise more of them on similar occasions. If nothing else, I predict you’ll find that last one to be a great stumper for your know-it-all friends.
