In case you wondered, the presentation by Rachel Paulose on human trafficking that had been scheduled for noon today at the Humphrey Institute has been postponed. The word released from Larry Jacobs, director of the Center for the Study of Politics and Governance, which was sponsoring the event, said: Rachel Paulose and Larry Jacobs tonight agreed to reschedule her talk at the Humphrey Institute for a time when the focus could be on human trafficking.” You get the message.
The Strib covered most of the post-resignation angles well with three stories and a timeline this a.m. Former U.S. Attorney David Lillehaug did an excellent interview with Kerri Miller on MPR’s Mid-morning, speculating and encouraging the Justice Department to let First Assistant U.S. Attorney Frank Magill run the office while things calm down.
It used to be standard operating procedure in the Justice Dept. to leave the first assistant in charge on an interim basis. When Paulose’s predecessor, Tom Heffelfinger, stopped down, he recommended his first assistant, Joan Humes, as the interim. Heffelfinger is a Republican. Humes, I gather, is a Democrat or at least, as Monica Goodling put it in her famous testimony on the question of how Paulose was chosen, Humes was known to be a “liberal.” Paulose was named the interim U.S. attorney within three days of Heffelfinger’s resignation.

Dammit, the pro sex slave lobby has won once again!!! They’ll do whatever they can to keep this woman silent.
The strib had estimates that the confirmation would take up to a year, so assuming Bush doesn’t declare himself president for life, the USAG would have a likely term of 3 months–not a real incentive. Unless they’re idiots they’ll let the assistant run out the clock; however, given the Bush track record, saying the x is something only an idiot would does not mean Bush wouldn’t do it.
Eric B, thanks for the great reporting on this story, and congrats on all the national blog-links I’ve seen, like Talking Points Memo. I feel like I really got great, reliable info on this one, and as it happened.
“Black Ink” is in the Big-Time now! And well deserved.
